Love and its Histories: Italian Perspectives
A one-day symposium at the University of Otago's Auckland Centre

From the 'dolce stil novo' to Casanova, from nineteenth-century Italian opera to papal notions of universal love in the 21st century, Italians have had a central role in shaping ideas about love in western culture. And since the beginning of western culture, love has undoubtedly been a major source of inspiration for human action, creation, and communication. Scholars of poetry and literature have always worked from this assumption, and researchers in the human sciences such as psychology, sociology and anthropology have long recognized the shaping role of emotions in human communities. But if the role of love as a dynamic force across time seems indisputable, historians themselves have largely shied away from specific investigation of what can seem a nebulous historical force.
In recent years this has begun to change: the aim of this one-day event is to bring together scholars interested in sharing research in Italian historical perspectives on love (in any and all of its guises). We invite proposals from a range of disciplines, covering a wide chronological spectrum. Given the theme of the ACIS conference, we also welcome papers offering transnational approaches.
The symposium will take place the day prior to the ACIS conference, and will be held at the University of Otago's Auckland Centre, in the central business district.
The symposium fee, which will include morning and afternoon refreshments as well as lunch, will be $80, or $40 for non-waged. Graduate students may be eligible for ACIS student bursaries. The fee will need to be paid in cash at the start of the symposium.
