Australia defines itself as multicultural and has come to establish ever-stronger ties with its South East Asian neighbours. Yet its culture, institutions and economy continue to be shaped by European ideas and practices.
The aim of the conference is to promote a wider understanding of contemporary Europe and its relationship to Australia and the Pacific Area. It will include presentations by a number of international experts, as well as a public lecture and reception.
The conference will focus on the following topics:
The EU as political space: democracy, citizenship
The EU as economic space: issues of growth, competitiveness and business management
The EU as international actor: the EU and the World, the EU and the Asia Pacific region
The EU as space of immigration and mobility
Unity in diversity: values, identity, culture in the EU
European Law: Status, Rights
Italy and Europe
