Julia Pelosi-Thorpe

Julia Pelosi-Thorpe recently completed her MA at the University of Melbourne on epistole eroiche, ‘letters of heroines/heroes,’ a little-studied subgenre of baroque Italian poetry. Her work on the ventriloquism of women’s voices by the poems’ libertine authors reflects on seventeenth-century attitudes toward gendered writing and speaking, and divisions or transgressions in discursive territory. In Venice, she will expand her research, toward academic publications and PhD applications. Crucial texts at the Biblioteca Marciana and Biblioteca della Fondazione Giorgio Cini offer further insight into the cultural networks—academies, friendships, print ventures—that produced, promoted, and circulated epistole eroiche.
